Go Live in Minutes.
For anyone looking to build their own community, renting a Rust server is the fastest way to start playing without the hassle of managing physical hardware from scratch. Setting up a Rust server on AnkSOFT is fully automated: once your payment is confirmed, your server is created automatically within 5-10 minutes, your dedicated Web Panel credentials are delivered, and you can start the server with a single click. From the panel you set the map size (worldsize), the seed, the maximum player count and the server name exactly as you like, then list your game on the public Steam server browser. Because this flow requires no technical knowledge, standing up your first Rust server takes only a few minutes.

The single most critical factor in a good Rust server hosting service is raw CPU power. Rust is extremely sensitive to single-core performance, which is why high clock-speed Ryzen 9 processors keep the tick rate (server refresh rate) stable as player counts climb and prevent issues like rubber-banding. NVMe SSD storage is essential to avoid stalls during world saves and prefab loads; unlike classic SATA drives, NVMe completes map generation in seconds. Third, a popular Rust server will sooner or later become an attack target, so Layer 3/4 and Layer 7 DDoS protection configured specifically for game traffic should be standard in any hosting service you choose.
The wipe cycle sits at the heart of Rust. Most communities run a map and/or blueprint wipe on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule; regular wipes bring players back for fresh starts and keep the server population lively. On large-pop servers, performance directly determines your fill rate: a server that freezes, lags, or crashes on wipe day quickly loses its players. So if you are targeting 100+ concurrent players, you should prioritize CPU power and disk speed before RAM. AnkSOFT infrastructure is optimized for exactly this scenario, keeping your server stable even under peak wipe-day traffic.
Server Sizing Guide
How many resources for how many players? Choose your plan based on the player count you are targeting.
~50 Slots · Starter
8 GB RAM is ideal for small groups, friend servers and vanilla or lightly modded experiences. The right starting point to launch your first Rust server and begin growing your community.
~100 Slots · Performance
12 GB RAM is recommended for growing communities and medium-to-heavy mod packs. With Ryzen 9 power it delivers a stable tick rate and low ping for up to 100 concurrent players.
150+ Slots · Extreme
16 GB RAM and 6 cores for 150+ players, busy communities and heavy mod packs (Zombie, RP, heavy economy). Runs without crashing even under peak wipe-day traffic.
Rust Server Types
In Rust it is the settings and the plugins, not the game mode, that give a server its character. You can build every one of the types below on the same plan.
-
Vanilla
The game's original balance: 1x gather, 1x craft, no plugins. It draws the players who want Rust at its harshest. The lightest type to run, comfortable from 8 GB.
-
Modded (2x, 5x, 10x)
Gather and craft rates are multiplied, and kit and shop plugins come into play. The most popular type by far. As the plugin count grows, 12 GB is the sensible floor.
-
Solo / Duo / Trio
Built around plugins that cap team size. Because large clans cannot steamroll smaller players, these servers tend to hold their population. Mid-tier resources are enough.
-
Battlefield / Arena
Gathering and building are disabled, combat is constant. The map stays small, but concurrent players and projectile traffic run high; what decides performance here is CPU clock speed, not RAM.
-
Roleplay and Economy
Long-running servers built on jobs, currency, shops and zone-rule plugins. With many plugins and persistent data to keep, they want 16 GB and generous disk.
-
PvE and Zombie
Player-versus-player damage is switched off and NPC and event plugins take the lead. Continuously running NPC AI is hard on the CPU, so a higher tier is recommended on busy maps.
Map Size (worldsize) and Seed
In Rust, map size directly drives memory, disk and map generation time. You set it from the panel and change it at wipe.
| worldsize | Character | Suitable slots | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3000 | Small and dense | ~50 | Frequent fights, the lightest resource use. An ideal starting point for a new server. |
| 3500 - 4000 | Balanced | 100 - 150 | The range most communities settle on. Monument variety and combat balance work out here. |
| 4500 - 5000 | Large | 150+ | Prevents build-space crowding on busy servers. Memory use and map generation time rise noticeably. |
| 6000 | Maximum | 200+ | The upper limit the game allows. Combined with a low population the map feels empty, so it is not recommended. |
The seed value determines the shape of the map. The same worldsize and seed pair always generates the same map, so you can note down a map you liked and bring it back at the next wipe.
How to Wipe a Rust Server
A wipe is the regular reset of your Rust server, and it is the single habit that affects your player numbers the most. There are two kinds: a map wipe resets the world and every structure on it, while a blueprint wipe also clears the recipes players have learned. Most communities run a map wipe every week and a blueprint wipe once a month; Facepunch's own forced update already resets the map on the first Thursday of each month.

Map wipe
- The world, every structure and all dropped items are reset.
- Usually run weekly; each wipe brings a fresh map with a new seed.
- Player inventories and learned blueprints are kept.
Blueprint wipe
- On top of the map, the recipes players have learned are cleared too.
- Most communities do it once a month, alongside the forced Facepunch update.
- Everyone starts from zero; the fairest but harshest reset.
When you wipe from the panel, which files you delete is critical: removing the wrong one takes your plugin settings and permissions with it. Our step-by-step guide covers exactly which files to delete, how to change the seed and how to set up a wipe schedule.
Unlimited Modding with Oxide / uMod
What truly makes Rust special is its modding ecosystem. Oxide (uMod) is the open-source modding framework that lets you load plugins onto your server. Thousands of plugins — kit systems, economy and shop add-ons, clan/team management, automated events, RP rules and anti-cheat tools — are available for free or paid through umod.org. In the AnkSOFT panel you install the Oxide framework with a single click, then upload the .cs plugin files you download into the oxide/plugins folder. When you add a plugin while the server is running it loads automatically; you can edit its settings from the JSON files under oxide/config. This way you manage your plugins live without restarting the server, assign permissions on a per-group basis, and offer your community a truly unique experience.

Installing Oxide / uMod in 3 steps
- Install Oxide with one clickSelect the uMod framework in the AnkSOFT panel; when the server updates, Oxide updates with it automatically.
- Upload your plugin filesDrag the .cs plugin files you downloaded from umod.org into the oxide/plugins folder. They load instantly, even while the server is running.
- Configure and assign permissionsEdit plugin settings in the JSON files under oxide/config and hand out permissions per group.
Most used plugin categories
- Kits and starter packs: item sets for new players, VIP kits.
- Economy and shop: in-server currency, item sales.
- Clan and team management: clan system, friends list, TC sharing.
- Event plugins: automated airdrops, heli and Bradley events.
- RP and rule tools: zone protection, raid scheduling, voting.
- Anti-cheat and moderation: cheat detection, auto-ban, logging.
